NIGERIAN EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND,BACKSLIDE AND BACKWARDS: A TUMULTUOUS DISCORDANT OF OUR EDUCATIONAL SECTOR BY :DADA BAMIDELE GODWIN

The educational system of Nigeria has witnessed more drastic transition fallout of its academic standard in recent times due to its affluent crisis rocky the functionality and sustainability of the Nigerian educational system Between the 1980’s till recent times, academic staff union of universities “ASUU” a trade union which have been demonstrating military action and practice in its bid to provide it’s members fairness and equality has entrenched a wholly benchmark in fast tracking the educational basis of Nigeria by in totality went on strike between 1980 till today numbering 11,700 days, 10 hours and 45 minutes in pressing for the demands of their members According to my research, never for once has there been a concrete agreement between the academic union and the federal government in providing sustainability in their negotiations It must the noted that nevertheless they are in all ramifications entitled to their demands but it must be stressed that agreements that will profer a lasting relationship with the government should be reached rather than pressing for annual or biannual demands which may likely lead to another strike While one is sympathetic to the claim that agreements should be honoured, the quantum of Asuu’s claim is put at about 1.2 trillion naira.

In 2009 when this was agreed, this was about 25 percent of Nigerian budget in general while I believe it may be illogical for someone to signed this on behalf of the government. To move forward, there may be a need for a total overhaul of the system altogether as I believe government need to curve deal with ASUU but most importantly think of it’s sustainability when going to the negotiating table There has been much debates about the recent cut off mark released by JAMB as the minimum score prerequisite for gaining admission into tertiary institutions, the taking point was that this new system may break the academic standard of education in Nigeria as against the onset pattern In reviewing the process of its enactment, I foresee a disparation and educational discordant as this will fast track ignominy of graduate students in years to come even though as the board have insisted it may provide more flexibility, it must be stressed that for restoration of academic excellence, there must be a scale of distinction and failures in providing a learning ground for future champions by imputing strong academic and educational system envisaged to be a 21st century standard.
