Ondo Varsity: ASUU Members Disagree with leadership over letter to the state governor
Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) , Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko,Ondo State chapter has accused the leadership of the union of pursuing personal interest in their letter written to the visitor and Governor of the state , Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.
In a statement signed by Dr Olusegun Owolewa on behalf of the concerned members accused the chairperson of the Union, Dr Sola Fayose of unilaterally writing a letter to the governor.
The members said the decision of the chairperson to write against the Vice Chancellor ,Prof Igbekele Ajibefun without approval from the Congress was condemnable.
The Chairperson in a letter dated April 14th 2017 had written to the governor of the state advising the government to set up a visitation panel for the purpose of correcting the alleged anomalies in the institution.
In the letter, the management was accused of some financial misappropriation and urged the government to investigate the Vice Chancellor.
But the members cautioned the chairperson against using the union as a platform to drive home his purported political ambition.
The statement read: ” This is a gross violation of what ASUU is known for. On several occasions ,the Congress has been turned to campaign ground for political gladiators who are eyeing political appointment without Dr Fayose’s calling them to order”
” We are also informed that he wants to be Commissioner for Science and Technology in the state under the new government and he does not believe he could the position on his own merit.”
They further said the letter written to the governor by the chairperson has confirmed the insinuations that some persons are planning to remove the Vice Chancellor of the university.
But in a swift reaction, the chairperson of the Union, Dr Sola Fayose , in a chat with The Politico said he was not pursuing any personal interest when he wrote the letter to the governor.
He said it was in the interest of the system, which he said was on the “verge of collapsing if urgent steps are not taken.”
He said the leadership of the Union were elected to take informed decisions on behalf of the members, saying all the issues raised in the letter were facts that are evident in the university.
He said: ” We have been discussing all these issues raised in our Congress and as leaders we act on behalf of Congress and report back to them .They should wait till when we will report back to them and if they feel we wrong ,we are going to accept rather for them to be saying they were not carried along ”
” The committee of vice chancellors has said there is nothing wrong on those issues raised and they have advised the university management to address the issues.”
Dr Fayose said there is need for the state government to constitute a panel to visit the institution ,saying it would go along way in addressing the problems in the university.
” The last visitation panel to the school was in 2010 and the rule says there should be visitation in every five years and we are now in 2017 . Things are not going on well in the university and we cannot fold our arms as a union and be looking how things are deteriorating and none of the said members that want to be sincere will come out to say all these issues raised were false.”
